Greenspun's currently has 1395 students enrolled and we have three counselors who work to meet their academic counseling needs. Each counselor is assigned to one grade level and remains with the grade level students during their three years at Greenspun. Primary functions of the counseling department include registration and scheduling of all students, individual and group counseling for both school and personal issues, tracking of student performance, and coordinating parent contact with teaching staff.
Counselors are available to assist parents with concerns regarding classroom performance and relationship issues between the students and their teachers. Counselors are generally participants in parent/teacher conferences in order to be more effective in assisting students with academic problems. When appropriate, referrals are made to other community resources for assistance.
Students who enroll at Greenspun Junior High make their first contact with the school through the counseling and guidance department. Most of our students attend one of Greenspun's "feeder" elementary schools and are pre-registered each spring through an articulation process with the 5th grade teachers of those schools. In addition, parents can learn about our programs in the spring, when we hold a “5th Grade Parent Night” meeting, during which prospective sixth grader parents get information about the policies, procedures, and rules of Greenspun Junior High School.
In addition, each feeder fifth grade is invited in the spring to visit Greenspun for a school orientation, tour of the facility, and lunch in our cafeteria. This visit is designed to calm our future 6th graders fears about making the move to junior high.
Current sixth and seventh grades are also pre-registered each spring for the following year's classes. Counselors hold pre-registration meetings with each group and they discuss placement in appropriate grade level classes for next year’s language arts, math, and science classes. Elective selections are also detailed.
Students who transfer to Greenspun during the school year meet individually with the appropriate counselor to plan their schedules. Counselors discuss with the student and parents which classes are offered and placement is based on those classes that will best meet the need of the child.
Once registered, each student is given a schedule, student agenda handbook that details the rules and attendance information of Greenspun, as well as a guided tour of the building. |
