Greenspun's current total of just over 1600 students is divided among three counselors. Each counselor is assigned to a class group and remains with that group during its three years at Greenspun. Primary functions of the counseling department include registration and scheduling of all students, individual and group counseling for both school and personal issues, tracking of student performance, and coordinating parent contact with teaching staff.
Counselors are available to assist parents with concerns regarding classroom performance; they may assist in solving those problems or arrange to have the parent meet with one or more teachers. Counselors are generally participants in parent/teacher conferences in order to be more effective in assisting students with academic problems. When appropriate, referrals are made to other community resources for assistance.
Students who enroll at Greenspun Junior High make their first contact with the school through the counseling and guidance department. Those students attending any of Greenspun's several "feeder" elementary school are pre-registered each spring through an articulation process with includes a "Fifth Grade Night" at the school, during which prospective sixth graders and their parents get information about their projected attendance and are able to see several of the school's performance groups in action.
In addition, each feeder fifth grade is invited in the spring to visit Greenspun for a brief orientation meeting, a tour of the building while classes are in session and lunch in the cafeteria as guests of the school. This visit is planned to help fifth graders make a significant transition with less anxiety about becoming junior high students.
Current sixth and seventh grades are also pre-registered each spring for the following year's classes. Counselors hold pre-registration orientation with each group and discuss placement in appropriate levels for upcoming English, math, reading and science classes. Elective selections are also detailed.
Students who transfer to Greenspun during the school year meet individually with the appropriate counselor to plan their schedules. Counselors discuss with the student and parents which classes are offered and placement in these classes for each student. Appropriate placement tests are given before schedules are constructed.
Once registered, each student is given a schedule and information about attendance at Greenspun. A student guided tour of the building is provided before the new student begins classes. |
