New Information

Dear Parents/Guardians:

1

When over 1400 students exit the school building at one time, our primary concern is student safety. Dropping off and picking up your child from school can be a frustrating experience. However, we have had 9 students hit by cars in the last two school years. Because of this, we formed a Safety Committee comprised of parents, staff, and community members to address the drop off and pick up issues in our congested parking lot.  Below are the NEW guidelines which were implemented on August 27th. The time one takes to follow these simple guidelines will ensure that students are not injured while being picked up, being dropped off, walking to school, or walking home from school.

We are so appreciative of the efforts of the Clark County School District Police Division for allocating an officer to Greenspun JHS. Officer Hank Reifenheiser is working diligently to assist with the traffic situation before and after school, as well as student activities throughout the school day. Out of the recently concluded Legislative Session, Senate Bill 534 amended Nevada law to provide for increased protection of school facilities, personnel, and most importantly, our students.  To that end, the jurisdiction of School Police now extends to the streets adjacent to school property for the purpose of issuing traffic citations for violations during school and school related activities.  School Police officials have informed us that they will be actively citing drivers engaging in illegal and potentially dangerous activities.  This new ticketing authority is applicable to both moving and nonmoving traffic violations.  Your child’s safety is our #1 priority.  By promoting, following, and enforcing traffic safety rules in and around our campus, we can share in creating a greater level of security for all of our children.

As you know, we only have one lane in the front parking lot open for drop off and pick up. In the mornings, the lane closest to the school is open for drop off. In the afternoon, the lane farther away from the school is used for pick up. This allows us the visibility needed to see students crossing. While we understand that this has resulted in longer wait times for parents/guardians, it is critical that we minimize the risk of students running /walking through the parking lot while cars are driving through it. We are asking that students be dropped off and picked up at the farthest point of the open lane in the school parking lot. Orange cones block the entrance to the other lane in the parking lot. Please do not remove the orange cones as they allow our flow of traffic to remain constant.

If you choose to drop off or pick up on Valle Verde Drive, please ensure that it is done on the same side of the school. Thank you for NOT dropping off or picking up your child across from the crosswalk. Cars blocking the crosswalk make it difficult for other drivers to see students. Furthermore, residents across the street appreciate the students not hanging out on the grass, by the walls, etc.  Please also DO NOT make any u-turns in the middle of Valle Verde. This illegal move not only jeopardizes the students who are walking or riding bikes, but it creates an unsafe situation for other cars, our volunteers, and our police officer who are all assisting with traffic. As a reminder, drivers making illegal u-turns may be ticketed by our police officer.

Students who want to ride a bike to school are required to attend a bike safety class. Bike permit stickers will be issued by October 14, 2007, to all students who have attended a bike safety class. Permits will be required as of October 14, 2007, before students may lock their bikes in a bike rack. This is just one more step to ensure students safety on the way to and from school.

If you have older siblings dropping off and/or picking up your child from school, we appreciate you reviewing these guidelines with them as well. We know that following these may take a few more minutes of your morning or afternoon. Thank you for taking the time to ensure that all of our students arrive to school and depart school safely!

Our kids are worth it!
